2019 Colors of the Year

Color trends can be interesting to follow, especially if you are a painting contractor. When paint manufacturers name their “color(s) of the year” I look to see if it’s a color I recognize or have applied in the past. Sometimes, that’s the case, as it is with Sherwin Williams 2019 Color of the Year – Cavern Clay (SW7701) which is what I used in our guest room. Cavern Clay (shown in the photo above) is a warm terracotta color that is reminiscent of the American Southwest.
Sherwin Williams suggests pairing the color with other balanced neutral colors such as grays and browns. “Combined with Moth Wing (SW9174) or Dark Clove (SW9183), Cavern Clay evokes a carefree yet sophisticated aesthetic. Alternatively, consider a refreshed version of the popular ‘70s earth tone combinations by pairing Cavern Clay with a dusty denim blue, such as Distance (SW6243) or even a fresh avocado, such as Haven (SW6437). Even when paired with an Origami White SW 7636, Cavern Clay is decidedly fresh.”

PPG Paints has named its 2019 Color of the Year – Night Watch (PPG1145-7). Night Watch is a dark green meant to evoke the lush greenery of nature.
PPG recommends that Night Watch can be used as a focal accent wall in a bedroom or dining room and that it “can be especially impactful in places without any view or tie to the outdoors.” For exteriors, it is a nice alternative to the black and deep blues that have been trending recently. It can also provide a nice splash of color to a monochromatic color scheme. It would look fantastic on an entry door.

While Sherwin Williams and PPG Paints have selected colors that are bold and natural, Benjamin Moore has elected Metropolitan AF-690 (a neutral beige) as it’s color of the year.
Per Benjamin Moore’s website, “Metropolitan AF-690 emanates nuance, harmony, and extravagant ease. Always adaptable, it softens to matte or shimmers with sheen. It’s neutral. It’s understated. It just is. This is color, off-duty.”

For its 2019 Color of the Year, Behr has chosen Blueprint (S470-5) which is a gray-blue. The color is somewhat versatile in that it can be used in all of their color palettes. Behr describes the color as “an honest, approachable color that conjures up the blueprints builders rely on to bring architectural designs to life.”
