Meet Our Team

Matt Brauer

Matt Brauer

President and CEO

Born in Winston-Salem, but spending most of his life in Ohio and Pennsylvania, Matt returned to North Carolina to join the Beach Painting family. He brings over 20 years’ experience in the construction industry having worked for two different ENR top-300 construction firms. Matt holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Xavier University and an Associate’s Degree in Construction Management from the University of Cincinnati. He has worked as a carpenter, foreman, superintendent, engineer, estimator, and senior project manager on major commercial and civil infrastructure projects throughout the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic.

Matt has taught courses and provided training in both CPM Scheduling and Estimating. With a history of solving complex problems and completing difficult projects under budget and on time, he was motivated to purchase Beach Painting in 2013.

In 2016, he formed Beach Construction Group, LLC., to allow for an expansion of Beach Painting's construction capabilities. His application for a general contractor's license was accepted by the NC Licensing Board and he successfully passed the NC Residential Contractor's Exam in June.

“Given the amount of wood rot on the Outer Banks and our growing reputation as 'rot repair specialists,' it's no surprise we've been asked to bid larger projects with broader scopes of work. As a licensed general contractor, we can now take on substantially more complex jobs ”

Matt enjoys spending time with his wife, Liz, and their four daughters – taking in all that the OBX has to offer. On weekends, he can be found on the beach, the golf course, or perfecting his barbeque skills in the back yard. Matt is also an avid musician.

Liz Brauer

Liz Brauer

Vice President and Office Manager

Liz was born in Northeast Ohio where she grew up, enjoying summer vacations with family and friends on the Outer Banks. She is a graduate of Baldwin Wallace College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

Liz taught middle school in Cincinnati for 8 years, where she met and married her husband, Matt. After the birth of their first two girls, she became a stay-at-home mom. Matt’s career took the family to Pittsburgh, where their 3rd daughter was born.

After moving the family to the Outer Banks, Liz joined the team at Beach Painting as the Office Manager. Using her superior organizational skills, developed during her teaching career, she has become an integral part of the company’s daily operations. Her duties have grown to include accounting, marketing, and human resources.

“It’s always nice when, no matter how busy you are, you can stop and look around to realize that you live on the Outer Banks. It’s a great place to live, work, and raise a family.”

Liz enjoys spending time with her family (which has grown to include a 4th daughter). In spite of a hectic schedule, she still finds time to volunteer in community organizations, including the local PTA. Her favorite activities (when time permits) include playing the piano, singing in choir, and walking on the beach.

Cathy Williams

Cathy Williams

Administrative and Marketing Assistant

Cathy moved to the Outer Banks in 1989 from Portsmouth, Virginia, to further her career in retail management. With her experience in the printing industry, she started her own business (Beach Blueprint) and operated the business successfully for over a decade during the OBX “building boom.” With the onset of the recession and sub-prime meltdown, new construction eventually ground to a standstill on the Outer Banks. Times were difficult for most construction-related companies. Many went out of business or simply left the beach.

Cathy continued working locally in the construction field and has been a valuable part of the Beach Painting family since 2014. She is usually the first point of contact for customers and handles bulk mailings, estimate requests, and many other marketing and administrative tasks. “I have worked with contractors for nearly 20 years and enjoy it very much. This is a great team to work with.”

Cathy enjoys cookouts with family and friends, jewelry making and crafting, boating, and the beach. She is the daughter of renowned local artist, Hudson Williams, and has recently begun creating her own art. It’s probably only a matter of time before you see her work displayed in the local galleries.

Dustin Vann

Dustin Vann

Estimator/Project Manager

Originally from Suffolk, but raised in Gates County, North Carolina, Dustin came to the Outer Banks at the age of 18. He worked as a painter and a carpenter on the beach for a few years before joining Beach Painting full-time in 2009.

Dustin’s hard work and attention to detail led to his promotion to foreman later that year. Within a short period of time, he became a top-performing foreman at Beach Painting and also advanced his carpentry skills. From 2010 to 2014, he tackled some of the largest and most difficult projects including work for the Outer Banks Hospital, Dare County Water Department in Frisco, and the OB Brewing Station.

In 2014, he replaced his painter’s whites with khakis and accepted the challenge of becoming an estimator & project manager. His meticulous approach and customer-friendly attitude have allowed him to quickly excel in this role.

Quality workmanship has always been one of Dustin’s strengths. “I like changing the look of a home for the better. I especially enjoy the fine detail work that shows quality and skill.”

Dustin enjoys playing softball and spending time at home and at the beach with his fiancé and two children. Before fatherhood, he was an ardent hockey player and regularly traveled to Virginia to play.

Ken Westbury

Ken Westbury

Painting Superintendent

Ken joined Beach Painting 2002 as a painter. He was promoted to foreman and gained a reputation for managing large and complex projects. In 2014 he was promoted to Superintendent of Painting Operations and tasked with the field management and coordination of all painting projects. He also manages manpower needs, new-hire training, safety, equipment and inventory maintenance, and quality control on all painting projects.

“There’s nothing better than working on the beach every day. Our crews are good hard-working guys. Producing good work is always our goal.”

Ken lives on the mainland with his wife Michele and mother-in-law Candy. If there’s anything he likes more than the beach, it’s being in the woods. He likes to spend his free time fishing, hunting, grilling, and cooking on the smoker.

Guy Carey

Guy Carey

Construction Superintendent

Guy grew up in Virginia Beach and used to visit the Outer Banks in the Fall, enjoying the tranquility and smaller crowds. He moved to the OBX in 2000, having spent years managing large scale construction projects throughout the country.

Guy joined the Beach Painting family in 2010 as a carpenter. Within a short time he was running a carpentry crew as the foreman focusing primarily on rot repair. He was promoted to Superintendent in 2013 and is now responsible for all carpentry crews. He also manages procurement of construction materials, coordination of contractors, maintenance of tools and equipment, safety, and all construction quality control. Guy handles the applications for building permits as well as scheduling the inspections. He also assists with estimating as needed.

Guy is a sportsman who enjoys all the OBX has to offer in terms of fishing. He also likes deer hunting when the time can be found. When the time isn’t available for a day on the water or in the woods, he can often be found riding the nearby country roads on his Harley.

Tom Riffe

Tom Riffe

Painting Foreman

There’s something to be said for chasing a dream. Tom spent most of his life in Akron, Ohio where he worked as a painting and tiling foreman. The Outer Banks was always a favorite vacation destination for him and his family. When the opportunity presented itself, he and his wife decided to take a chance and make the OBX their home in 2014.

While figuring out the logistics of relocation and determining possible employment opportunities, Tom happened to drive past the Beach Painting office on Colington Road and took that as a positive omen. The next week, he joined our team as a painter.

“I like seeing how pleased the customers are after a job well done and getting to work in so many different neighborhoods. The OBX is a beautiful place”

It didn’t take long for us to assess Tom’s skill and expertise.  Within the year, he was promoted to foreman and has shown exceptional quality in his work. He has also proven to be a great resource for training new employees.

Tom enjoys spending time with his wife Lynn and their children and grandchildren. He also enjoys the beach and the scenic beauty of the Outer Banks.

Jimmy Quidley

Jimmy Quidley

Originally from Norfolk, Jimmy has over 30 years of experience as a commercial and residential drywall finisher. He began his career working in the shipyards. He attended New Horizons Technical School and began working as a carpenter and finisher. Over the years he has managed large commercial and residential drywall projects and has the reputation of a superior craftsman.

Jimmy joined Beach Painting in 2012. He is responsible for most of our drywall repairs, popcorn removal, and specialty finishes. Quite possibly the best drywall finisher on the beach, Jimmy also manages painting projects as needed. When asked what he likes best about his job at Beach Painting – “No two days are ever the same.”

A baseball fan since boyhood, he enjoys attending Outer Banks Daredevils games. He also enjoys fishing and spending time with his family.

Marshall Pittman

Marshall Pittman

Construction Foreman

Originally from Winchester, VA, Marshall came to the Outer Banks in 1994. He started his own construction business and worked as a subcontractor for some of the better known homebuilders on the beach. He worked on the ships watch at Jeanette's Pier and completed several projects for the USCG at Oregon Inlet. Over the years, he has become skilled in every aspect of carpentry and homebuilding.

Marshall joined Beach Painting in 2009. The favorite part of his job is "working with my hands and seeing the smile on the homeowner's face when the job is complete."

Marshall enjoys spending time at the beach, gardening, music, and woodworking in his spare time.
